WordPress Widget Walk Through

Presented by James Tombs, Associate Director Design & Development at UMC Digital

This presentation offered a detailed walk through of several key WordPress widgets: Marquee, Accordion, Card, Team, and Post Loop. For each widget, we covered its purpose, when and why to use it, and how to implement it effectively. We also held a Q&A session to answer questions.

Marquee Widget:

We explored various Marquee widget examples, demonstrating its use for banners with images, videos, or sliders. Live examples included the rotating slides on the law school's site and the static slides on the EHS site.

Accordion Widget:

We discussed different Accordion widget variations, highlighting their use for condensing long-form content. A key focus was on the difference between using tabs versus an accordion and best practices for readability.

Card Widget:

We reviewed how the Card widget can be used in various ways to display content. Examples included layouts with images on the left, cards with images on top and no buttons, and a variation using icons.

Team Widget:

We reviewed how the Team widget can effectively showcase team members.

Post Loop Widget:

We explored the Post Loop widget, which is essential for displaying a dynamic list of posts. We also discussed the fundamentals of WordPress posts, the difference between categories and tags, and how the Post Loop can be integrated with the Card widget to create a visually appealing feed of posts.
